Giulio Genova

Postdoctoral Data Scientist – Dynamic Soil-Landscape Modeler

Giulio Genova

Giulio is a Postdoctoral Data Scientist at OpenGeoHub, specializing in digital soil mapping, geocomputation, and the integration of Earth Observation and machine learning for environmental applications. At OpenGeoHub, he contributes to high-profile European Commission–funded and international projects by developing scalable geocomputing solutions, automating spatial modeling workflows, and supporting the delivery of reproducible scientific outputs.

His work focuses on preparing and harmonizing large soil and environmental datasets, building predictive soil and landscape models, and optimizing spatial analysis pipelines using high-performance computing. He also develops environmental data products—such as data cubes and standardized databases—documenting workflows through computational notebooks to ensure openness, reproducibility, and reusability. Giulio plays a central role in the AI4SoilHealth project, where he coordinates OpenGeoHub’s contributions, ensuring alignment across technical partners and helping to advance Europe-wide soil health monitoring through artificial intelligence and large-scale Earth Observation.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Preparing, harmonizing, and cleaning point datasets and soil spectroscopy data for predictive modeling
  • Developing and publishing environmental data products and documenting workflows
  • Running predictive soil mapping using machine learning frameworks such as scikit-learn and tidymodels
  • Implementing and optimizing spatial analyses on HPC systems, including parallelisation and workflow automation
  • Reporting research results and contributing to peer-reviewed publications
  • Providing training and supervising junior team members
  • Supporting software, workflow design, and technology selection across OpenGeoHub projects
