Our commitment
OpenGeoHub Foundation is a not-for-profit research foundation based in Doorwerth, the Netherlands. Our work is built on the principle that open geospatial data should be usable by as many people as possible, and we consider the accessibility of our own websites to be part of that commitment.
This statement describes the current accessibility of the OpenGeoHub website, the measures we take, and the limitations we are aware of. We publish the limitations openly rather than claim a level of conformance we have not verified.
Conformance status
We aim to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 at level AA. The website has not been assessed by an independent auditor, so we describe it as partially conformant: most of the guidelines are met, and the exceptions we know about are listed below.
OpenGeoHub is a private foundation and is not a public sector body, so the obligations of the EU Web Accessibility Directive (2016/2102) do not apply to this website. We follow the guidelines because they are good practice, not because we are required to.
Measures we take
- Pages declare their language, so screen readers pronounce content correctly.
- Images carry text alternatives describing their content or purpose.
- Page zoom and pinch-zoom are never disabled, so text can be enlarged in the browser.
- Animation and motion effects are reduced when your operating system asks for reduced motion.
- Pages are written so that their main content is present in the HTML, rather than appearing only after scripts have run.
Motion, flashing and visual effects
The OpenGeoHub home page includes an animated globe sequence that responds to scrolling, with a brief visual distortion effect partway through. If your operating system is set to reduce motion, that distortion effect is disabled entirely and the globe is shown without it.
You can enable this setting in your system preferences: on macOS under Accessibility and Display, on iOS under Accessibility and Motion, on Windows under Accessibility and Visual effects, on Android under Accessibility, and on GNOME under Accessibility. The setting applies to every website that supports it, not only this one.
If you are sensitive to motion or flashing and encounter anything on this site that troubles you, please tell us using the contact details below so that we can change it.
Known limitations
We are aware of the following shortcomings and intend to address them:
- Much of the text is sized in fixed units, so a larger default font size set in your browser preferences may not be applied. Zooming the page does work and enlarges all content.
- There is no skip link for bypassing the navigation, so keyboard users must tab through the menu on each page.
- Videos embedded from external platforms depend on those platforms for captions, and not every recording we link to is captioned.
- The animated sections of the home page have not been tested in full with screen readers and other assistive technology.
- The website has not undergone a formal accessibility audit by a third party.
Feedback and contact
If any part of this website prevents you from reaching information or completing something you came to do, please email support@opengeohub.org. Describe what you were trying to do and what got in the way, and we will help you get the information another way and work on fixing the barrier itself.
We welcome reports about problems not listed on this page. Hearing about them is the main way we find out what needs attention.
